Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez will head into contract talks this week on the back of a fresh round of links with other clubs.

Benitez – who has guided the Magpies to Premier League safety on a shoestring budget – has just one year left of his current deal at United and is keen to carry out a project at the club’s Benton base.

Benitez is considered a long shot for the Arsenal job with Arsene Wenger set to leave the club after 22 years in the capital.

However, Benitez woke up this morning to headlines in both the English and Italian Press suggesting that his services are wanted elsewhere.

The Daily Star ran with a piece indicating that Leicester City, who were thrashed 5-0 by Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, would like Benitez to replace under-fire Claude Puel this summer.

There were also reports in Tuttosport that Benitez’s former club Napoli are keen to offer him the chance to return to Serie A, if Maurizio Sarri quits the Italian club at the end of the season.

Sarri has been linked with jobs at Chelsea, Arsenal, and Monaco meaning there could be a vacancy in Naples soon.

Napoli are currently fighting for the title in Serie A with Juventus, but many of the current team were signed by Benitez and he is still regarded highly by the hierarchy at Napoli.

Meanwhile Manchester City Pep Guardiola feels Benitez is a genuine candidate for manager of the year.

Guardiola said: “Believe me, if the Burnley manager won it or, for example, Rafa Benitez at Newcastle – he’s done an amazing job.”

Benitez also won praise from José Mourinho last week when he claimed that given the resources available he has performed brilliantly, he said: “Benitez has done the best in the league he is in.”
